Taraxacum Officinale

Orally, the above ground parts of taraxacum officinale (dandelion) are used for loss of appetite and dyspepsia, flatulence, and as a laxative, promoter of healthy circulation, and for relief from arthritic joints. Conversely the roots are used for gallstones, bile stimulation, and as a coffee substitute. The whole plant actually has more vitamin A than carrots.

The sesquiterpene lactones are responsible for the diuretic effects and the mild anti-inflammatory activity in the above ground parts, while taraxacin favourably affects digestion. The bitter constituents in the roots are responsible for increasing bile flow.

Individuals with acute gallbladder inflammations, bile duct obstructions, and intestinal blockages should exercise caution with dandelion. Individuals that are sensitive to ragweed, daisies, and marigolds may also be allergic or sensitive to dandelion.
